Time has a shape
People already use spatial language for time—moving forward, looking back, a full week. The interface could use that mental model rather than inventing a new one.
Making time physical through a hands-on calendar interface.

Tangible UI is a physical calendar that brings everyday planning off the screen. The prototype explores how turning, pressing and moving physical controls can help people navigate dates and make plans with less visual noise and more spatial memory.
Digital calendars are powerful, but they often turn a simple act—understanding the shape of a week—into a dense grid of taps, menus and notifications. The challenge was to preserve useful digital behaviour while making planning feel direct, calm and physically legible.
I began by breaking calendar use into small behaviours instead of screens: glance at the day, move through time, select a date, add an intention and confirm it. This shifted the design question from ‘what should the interface look like?’ to ‘what should each action feel like?’

A physical action without a clear response feels broken. Every turn and press needed a visible or tactile consequence at the same moment.
The prototype became easier to understand when each control held one stable responsibility instead of changing meaning across many modes.
The process moved from abstract questions to increasingly tangible decisions. Each round had one job: expose what was unclear before adding more fidelity.
I translated common calendar tasks into a compact interaction map, separating navigation, selection and confirmation before deciding on form.
Low-fidelity physical studies tested scale, reach and the relationship between the hand, the controller and the calendar display.
The interaction was refined so each physical input produced one predictable response, reducing hesitation and accidental actions.
Not just what changed—why it changed.
Rotary movement supports moving across dates because the physical direction mirrors the passage of time.
A deliberate press separates browsing from choosing, giving important actions a clear moment of commitment.
The interface prioritises the date and immediate context, keeping secondary information available without dominating the object.
The final concept pairs a tactile control surface with a restrained calendar display. Rather than recreating a phone interface in hardware, it gives physical form to the few actions that benefit most from touch.
Move through days and weeks with a continuous physical gesture that remains understandable without instruction.
A distinct confirmation action prevents browsing from becoming an accidental calendar change.
The display responds to the object while keeping the current date and planning context easy to scan.
The object creates a deliberate planning moment without opening a notification-heavy personal device.


This was an exploratory prototype, so its value is demonstrated through interaction clarity rather than business metrics. It established a tangible interaction language that can be developed through longer-term user evaluation.
01Tangible does not automatically mean intuitive; the mapping between action and outcome still has to be learned or immediately recognisable.
